June 2007 – It's Getting Warm Outside
Your Home – Keeping Cool
 |
Now that we’re heading into summer, it’s important to make sure that your home is ready for the summer heat. By preparing your home now, you will not only be comfortable when the heat kicks in, but you can save hundreds of dollars in energy costs. Below are some tips that will help you keep your home cool without wasting energy or driving up your utility bills. |
- Keep your home closed during the day to keep out the heat and humidity.
- If you own an air conditioner, make sure you thoroughly clean or replace its filters before use.
- Keep drapes and blinds closed during the day to keep out the sun.
- Install awnings and plant shade trees near windows to keep the sun out and shade your home.
- Turn off electronics such as your computer when not in use.
- Keep appliances and lamps away from the thermostat on your air conditioner.
- Check the insulation in your attic. During the summer, your attic can reach temperatures of up to 150 degrees and, without proper insulation, this heat can seep into your home.
- Be sure to shade your air conditioner from direct sunlight.
- Remember, direct sunlight on your home and your appliances can significantly increase the internal temperature of your home. By keeping the sun out and only using your appliances when you need to and during the evening, you can keep your home comfortable this summer.
Finances – Summer Vacation
Now that we’re entering another summer facing record high gasoline and energy costs, taking that summer vacation can be more expensive than ever before. The good news is that you can still get out of town and save on your next vacation by following some simple tips. Of course, the easiest way to save on your vacation this year is to cut back and explore the attractions closest to you. Being a tourist in your own city can be just as fun and rewarding as traveling great distances. You can also save on your vacation this year if you:
Plan Ahead. If you know the exact dates you’ll be taking your vacation, then you can start shopping now. By shopping for your vacation now, you can book it when a deal becomes available. The other option is to be flexible. By flying during non-peak times and considering multiple destinations you can book a great vacation based on what you are willing to spend.
Check Multiple Carriers. Don't be afraid to check multiple websites and sources for airfare and hotels. Different sites often make exclusive deals with hotel chains and airlines so they will have rates that you will not be able to find anywhere else. You should also go directly to the airline or hotel to see if they have any specials. It is also a good idea to call a travel agent for a quote before booking as they may be able to find special package pricing or recommend less expensive alternatives.
Ask for Discounts. When it comes to hotel rates, you can often get a better rate simply by asking for it. Try calling the hotel you want to stay at directly for a quote and ask them if that is the best rate they have. Many hotels empower their front desk agents to negotiate a rate and, as long as they have rooms available, they may give you a better rate if you ask for one.
Inspiration – Avoid the Summertime Blues
Even if you are stuck at the office, don’t forget to make it a point to enjoy the summer. Now that the days are longer and the weather is nice, try changing your routine to make the most of the summer season. One of the easiest ways to do this is to take advantage of the longer days. Instead of heading straight home after work, try taking some time to walk in the evening or visiting a local park for some fresh air. Even if you choose to spend your evenings at home, you can celebrate the summer by firing up the grill for dinner or making a special summertime treat such as homemade ice cream or fresh fruit.
The simple act of changing your daily routine can do wonders to elevate your mood during the day and some outdoor exercise such as walking or jogging will not only improve your health, but will make you feel better and make you more productive during the day. The summer doesn’t last long, so be sure to make the most of it.
